HSD Reopening Message 2

Transcript of 7-31-2020 HSD Reopening Message posted to the HSD Facebook Page:

Hello Hockinson Families.

I am Steve Marshall, Superintendent of the Hockinson School District. As most of you already know, we are a district that is celebrating its 150th anniversary and will be starting its 151st year in an online education environment. Our district, like others in our area and state, had to make a decision about reopening its schools and given our county’s Phase 2 status and infection trends we are gearing up for a virtual start on Sept. 2 while remaining hopeful for a shift to hybrid learning shortly thereafter.

In the message I sent out Wednesday, I promised a Reopening Schools page would be added to the HSD website soon. That page, while still under construction, is now up and features information that I hope answers many of your questions. I know it will not answer all of them. We will update this page as we receive more clarifications and settle on many of the details involved in reopening.

I expect those details to start rolling out next week. Our principals return next Monday and, while half of them will spend a few half days attending a student equity training, the entire week is devoted to solution-oriented planning to “win the day” for our students and best support our staff and families. It is important to know that your students, along with their learning and safety, are our #1 priority. They will be at the center of every decision we make and we will break through, climb over, or work around the obstacles of distance learning to: 1. Keep them connected to their teacher and each other and 2. Engaged in school. As we plan, we will look for opportunities to support our students’ socioemotional health whether that takes the form of things like remote counseling, mentoring, assemblies, online clubs, or schedules that have structure as well some flexibility.

As has been communicated previously, Hockinson families will have two online options this fall: Remote classroom learning or what we are calling the Hockinson Virtual Academy, which would be a partnership between our district and whatever online learning provider our Board approves. We will not know that provider until Aug. 10 at the earliest.

I, along with HSD teachers and staff, know that this format creates challenges for our families. So we will do our best to support you by providing wi fi access for our families with limited connectivity and creating new child care and learning support programs.

I know the uncertainty is hard on you and our students. So we will provide you with ongoing communication, using one-way updates such as this video and two-way communication such as surveys.

I hope you all have a great weekend. Although the play equipment at Hockinson Heights is unavailable, remember that our tracks, courts, and fields at our middle school and high school are open for you to use.  So use them to clear your mind and enjoy the sun..just please remember to keep your distance and help us keep these facilities open by treating them with respect.

Take care, everyone.
