Dear Hockinson Community,

As you probably are aware, Hockinson’s capital levy for high school field and track improvements—also known as the turf levy—has failed with nearly 60 percent of our voters saying no.

We thank everyone who cast a ballot for making your voices heard. This is what the democratic process is all about—making decisions together.

Now we know that despite high interest in synthetic turf among some in our community, it is not a priority for Hockinson as a whole.

Also, we appreciated hearing the concerns of some community members about synthetic turf.

So although it is disappointing that we have not found a solution to the challenges facing the High School’s primary athletic field, this levy process succeeded in opening up a community conversation.

We are, as always, grateful to our community for its generosity and support. Thanks to your votes over the past two years, we have initiated construction of a much-needed Middle School, expanded and improved facilities at our High School, bolstered security at our Elementary School, retained key educational staff and learning opportunities, and upgraded aging equipment.

Our school district could do none of this without you and your help bridging the gap between what the state pays and what it actually costs to educate our students.

Sincerely,

Sandra Yager
