Facilities Planning Committee (FPC)

Purpose of the FPC

Group of adults around a table indoors

  • Inform members about facilities updates, projects, and needs.
  • Collaborate on solutions for short- and long-term needs.
  • Guide a district-wide maintenance and facilities plan.
  • Communicate with the community on these topics.

The FPC, which began in the 2022-2023 school year, consists of community members, a board member, and HSD staff.

Meetings are led by two representatives from ESD 112’s Construction Services Group. This 14-member committee was formed at the start of the school year.

Providing safe, high-quality schools for HSD’s 1,965 students is a big job, but the FPC will not do it alone. The FPC sends regular reports and survey opportunities to Hockinson families

Top 4 School Facility Priorities

The Facilities Planning Committee is gathering community feedback to help find possible solutions to Hockinson's greatest school facility needs. The top 4 priorities below are based on family feedback in district-wide facility planning surveys this year:

Exterior of blue steel building with garage bay door.

The proposed Career & Technical Education building at Hockinson High School would be a hands-on space for students to explore job readiness skills in classes like wood tech, construction skills, and more. Matching funds and in-kind donations have been offered from industry leader and philanthropist Douglas Green to support the project.

The Hockinson High School track is over 20 years old, and HHS is the only school in its 17-school Greater St Helens league without an artificial turf stadium field. Maintaining both costs the district over $20,000 annually.

The field is multi-use: PE, athletics, marching band, and community recreation.

Student stands outdoors on basketball court in misty weather while wearing an orange foam hand.

A covered outdoor area at HMS would offer students protection from the elements during lunch, recess, and physical actuvities regardless of weather conditions.

HVAC unit outdoors with dust and debris on front.

Roofs and HVAC systems at school sites and the Community Center/District Office are approaching or have already reached the end of their operational lifespans.

Your input is the very heart of this process.

Survey #4

In survey #4, the FPC asked families for feedback on five facility projects with cost estimates. 307 respondents ranked facility project priorities in the following order: Build a second elementary school, school safety improvements, add a Career & Technical Education building at the high school, replace the track and install a synthetic turf field at the high school, and construct a covered play area at HMS.

Survey #3

This fall, the Facilities Planning Committee (FPC) invited Hockinson families to participate in FPC survey #3, designed to engage the community in facilities improvement priorities and follow-up on feedback given in survey 1 and survey 2.

Survey #2

Survey #1

New HMS Perimeter Fence Looking East

In FPC Survey #1, the Facilities Planning Committee asked families to rank their top facility priorities. Families ranked overcrowding at the elementary school, making safety improvements at the elementary school, addressing the aging track and field at the high school, and replacing HVACs and roofs.
