After School Adventures

After School Adventures (ASA) is a gap care program provided by Hockinson Community Education that services children attending Hockinson Heights Elementary School. Students from Transition to Kindergarten through 5th grade participate in the program on regular attendance days Monday through Friday. The hours of operation are after school from 2:30 - 6:00 pm (Wednesdays beginning at 1:30 pm due to the one hour early release). Students are bussed down from the Elementary school to the Community Center building. Our two classroom spaces offer a multitude of play opportunities including dramatic play, sensory centers, home center, libraries, construction and manipulative center, art center, and gym play to name a few.

Note: ASA is currently full for the 2023-2024 school year. Registration for the 2024-2025 school year will open on Wednesday, May 1st and closes June 5th.

What is your staffing ratio and who are the staff?
Our program has a 15:1 student to staff ratio. Our staff are Community Education employees who have a passion to work with students. To learn more about our wonderful staff, please see our staff bio section of our webpage!

How much is tuition?

A Sibling Discount of $380 is offered for Monthly enrolled students

Do you provide care when school is canceled or on non-attendance school days?

ASA is follows the Hockinson School District calendar and its closures. In the event inclement weather is involved, ASA will close along with the rest of the District’s buildings. For non school attendance days, that are not federal holidays (ie. winter/spring break, teacher in service days, and semester breaks), Hockinson Community Education will open a special registration form for ASA registered students to sign up for Day Camp.

Do the children have an opportunity to have a snack at ASA?

Students are provided with a single serving afternoon snack.

Does the public have access to the Community Center building during hours of operation?

No, the Community Center building doors are always locked. This childcare facility only allows access to authorized adults when in operation. Outside of childcare operation hours, the building is occupied by various Community Education programs, classes, and public rentals.

What is the atmosphere like in your program?

The expectations of students are reflective of those they are accustomed to in their school setting. The harmony of ASA relies on the social and emotional regulation of our students with little redirection from staff members. ASA operates under 5 basic rules:

1. Keep hands, feet, body to yourself
2. Kind words only
3. Ask before leaving the room
4. Walking feet only
5. Respect the space and each other

Our Staff

Hi I’m Coleen Parthemer, Childcare Coordinator for After School Adventures. I started as an ASA staff/teacher and now after 10 years working for HCE, I’m the Childcare Coordinator! This year I am excited to have the opportunity to get to know your student(s) in this new role.

I grew up in Hockinson where I completed my K-12 education and even met my husband in elementary school; needless to say, this small town has a special place in my heart. Staying local, I furthered my education in Childhood Development and Psychology. Now I stay busy raising two (4 yrs & 2yrs old) sweet kids.

In addition to working for HCE, I will also be continuing my 9th season coaching girls basketball at Hockinson High School in the winter. Working with and walking alongside students in Hockinson is my passion. What an awesome community we get to call home!

Hi, I’m Madison Bailey! I have lots of experience in child care and love working with kids. I grew up in a house full of siblings and I have babysat since I was a sophomore in high school. I also nannied throughout my junior and senior year. I have been working in special education at a middle school as a paraeducator assistant since graduating from HHS in 2022. I enjoy reading, hiking, hanging out with friends and family, and playing volleyball. I plan on attending college and pursuing a career in teaching in the near future!

Hi my name is Mollie Isaacson. It is such a joy to be a part of the ASA team! I come from a big family and am the youngest of 14 children. I have 32 nieces and nephews which gives me tons of experience working with kids. I look forward to seeing the ASA family when I work.

Greetings! I am Mrs.O’Malley and I've had the privilege to work for HSD for six years. My employment here began as a substitute teacher. I've subbed at each of our schools but have spent the majority of my time at HHES. There are not many positions, grades or specialties at HHES I've not provided coverage for. This year I was presented with the opportunity to move to the Community Center as the Interim Community Education/Facility Use Coordinator.

I am a Pacific Northwest kid and grew up in North Vancouver. I went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art and Psychology. My family settled in Clark County in 2006 and we've been living in Hockinson for the past nine years.

My sophomore daughter and senior son both attend HHS. Our family also includes my husband, our dog and two cats. We love to hike and play games as a family!

Hello! My name is Aidan Willis and I am a junior at Hockinson High School. I am involved with FBLA, National Honor Society, and our school's ASB class. I’ve been working at ASA since July and I absolutely love it!

Hi, my name is Sarah DeRoos! I am a current junior at Hockinson High School. I am very passionate about being involved in the school, from being a member of FBLA and ASB, to participating in many school sports! I have been working at ASA since November of 2023 and have prior babysitting experience. I am so grateful to get to build relationships with the students, and learn along with them!

Hi! My name is Ainsley Burckhard! I am a senior at Hockinson High School. I am involved in Leadership/ASB, Future Business Leaders of America, Cheer, Tennis, National Honor Society, and Environmental Club. I have been working at ASA since June and have previous experience working with kids as a youth cheer coach. I am excited to get to know your students this school year at ASA!

My name is Addy Stecher. I have been working with kids for 6 years as a nanny, babysitter, and now as a part of the ASA staffing team. Working with kids is my passion! I am a senior at HHS as well as a running start student. My favorite thing to do is spend quality time with my family and friends. I always look forward to engaging with the kids at ASA and being as involved with them as possible in the classroom to make their experience here fun.

Hello my name is Ellie! I’m currently a senior at Washington State University Vancouver, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Human Development specializing in Child Development. I have been working with kids through babysitting and Nannying for about 8 years, and I enjoy every minute of it! Growing up going to Hockinson schools, it means a lot to me to give back to the students in our community. I look forward to my future with ASA!
