After School Adventures

After School Adventures (ASA) is a gap care program provided by Hockinson Community Education that services children attending Hockinson Heights Elementary School. Students from Transition to Kindergarten through 5th grade participate in the program on regular attendance days Monday through Friday. The hours of operation are after school from 2:30 - 6:00 pm (Wednesdays beginning at 1:30 pm due to the one hour early release). Students are bussed down from the Elementary school to the Community Center building. Our two classroom spaces offer a multitude of play opportunities including dramatic play, sensory centers, home center, libraries, construction and manipulative center, art center, and gym play to name a few.

ASA FAQ’s

What is your staffing ratio and who are the staff?

Our program has a 15:1 student to staff ratio. Our staff are Community Education employees who have a passion to work with students. You can meet the 2025-2026 school year staff in our staff bio section of our webpage!

How much is tuition?
Registered days are contracted for the school year.
2025-2026 School year tuition:

Monthly: $415

Monthly SIBLING: $400

4 Days per Week: $365

3 Days per Week: $300

2 Days per Week: $220

1 Day per Week: $125

1 Day per Week (Wed Only): $155

Do you accept State Childcare Subsidy Payments?

No, After School Adventures does not accept State Childcare Subsidy Payments because the program is not a licensed care center with the State of Washington. ASA is a Community Education after school program (similar to a club or a sport).

Do you provide care when school is canceled or on non-attendance school days?

ASA follows the Hockinson School District calendar and its closures. In the event inclement weather is involved, ASA will close along with the rest of the District’s buildings. For non school attendance days, that are not federal holidays (i.e. winter/spring break, teacher in service days, and semester breaks), Hockinson Community Education will open a special registration form for ASA registered students to sign up for Day Camp. Day Camp programming is based on staffing availability and if the minimum participant registration is met.

Do the children have an opportunity to have a snack at ASA?

Students are provided with one single serving afternoon snack.

Does the public have access to the Community Center building during hours of operation?

No, the Community Center building doors are always locked. This childcare facility only allows access to authorized adults when in operation. Outside of childcare operation hours, the building is occupied by various Community Education programs, classes, and public rentals.

What is the atmosphere like in your program?

The expectations of students are reflective of those they are accustomed to in their school setting. The harmony of ASA relies on the social and emotional regulation of our students with little redirection from staff members. ASA operates under 5 basic rules:

1. Keep hands, feet, body to yourself
2. Kind words only
3. Ask before leaving the room
4. Walking feet only
5. Respect the space and each other

Our Staff

Mrs. O’Malley

Greetings! I am Mrs. O’Malley and I've had the privilege to work for HSD for eight years. My employment here began as a substitute teacher. I've subbed at each of our schools but have spent the majority of my time at HHES. There are not many positions, grades or specialties at HHES I've not provided coverage for. I took on the position as the Community Education/Facility Use Coordinator in the fall of 2023.

I am a Pacific Northwest kid and grew up in North Vancouver. I went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art and Psychology. My family settled in Clark County in 2006 and we've been living in Hockinson for the past nine years.

My family includes my husband, our HHS graduate, our senior daughter, our dog and two cats. We love to hike and play games as a family!

Coleen Parthemer, Childcare Coordinator for After School Adventures

Hi I’m Mrs. Coleen, Childcare Coordinator for After School Adventures. I started as an ASA staff/teacher in the 2014-2015 school year and am now the Childcare Coordinator for Community Education!

I grew up in Hockinson where I completed my K-12 education and even met my husband in elementary school; needless to say, this small town has a special place in my heart. Staying local, I furthered my education in Human Development and Psychology. Now I stay busy raising two (1st grade and TK) sweet kids.

Working with and walking alongside students in Hockinson is my passion. What an awesome community we get to call home!

Ainsley Burckhard

Hi! My name is Ainsley and I am so excited to spend the year with your TK/K students as the TK/K supervisor! I joined the ASA staff team during the 2023-2024 school year after having a great experience as a Camp Hock staff member in the summer of 2023. In addition to ASA, I coach Varsity Cheer at HHS and volunteer coaching cheerleading for kids Kindergarten-8th grade. I graduated from HHS in 2024 and am currently continuing my education online at the University of Washington, studying Integrated Social Sciences. I can’t wait for an amazing year getting to know your kids and families!

Hello! My name is McKenna and I love being a staff member at ASA! I started my job as a childcare assistant in 2022 after graduating from Hockinson High School. Since then, I’ve worked at ASA whenever I am home from college for both after school care and summer camp! Next spring I will graduate from WSU Pullman with a B.A. in Elementary Education and I plan to get my masters degree immediately after. ASA is one of the things I look forward to the most whenever I am back in Hockinson; it is always great to see the kids, staff, and families that I have gotten to know through the years!
