The HHS Track is 22 years old and in need of resurfacing. The current surface is cracked and in some spots worn through the asphalt underlayment. Due to the age of the track, two track installers recommended removing and replacing both the rubber surface and asphalt - a project that would cost close to $1 million dollars. Replacing just the surface will cost around $400,000. The HSD does not have the funding to cover either option.
The HSD is committed to maintaining our community’s investment in Hockinson’s schools. At the same time, our budget allows us only to maintain our facilities at a certain level. Beyond that level, we have to seek additional funding whether it comes in the form of a grant, capital levy or bond.
The capital levy being proposed on the April 22 Special Election ballot includes projects that include campus safety and security, not the improvement of athletic facilities. So the HSD is planning on submitting an application for a state recreation grant this June. If we are not awarded the grant, we will re-apply for the next year. We will also continue to look for other grants. Meanwhile, we are looking at shifting all home track meets to away venues for the 2026 season. HSD families can count on us to update them on any progress along the way.
