HSD Grounds Crew fixes broken water pipe at HHES.

With temperatures in the 30s, Tuesday was a less-than-ideal day to be outside for a few minutes. So you can imagine what it was like for our Grounds workers, who spent hours repairing an underground water leak.

HSD Operations Supervisor David Wilson and Grounds employees Mario Cruz-Medina and Kade Hoots stepped up when they received the news of a break in a 2” water main at Hockinson Heights Elementary School. To complicate matters, the break was located directly under a sidewalk!

After locating the leak, the team didn't hesitate to make the repair in house to minimize cost and disruption in service to the eight portables classrooms served by the water line. Although the repair took nearly six hours to complete, the staff and students in the portable took the inconvenience in stride. After all, they still had heat and power!

Wilson said the experience was “brutal.” But he was pleased with the outcome and appreciative of the efforts of Criuz-Medina and Hoots. “These two step up time and time again and they stepped up big-time this week. Besides helping prepare for [this Thursday’s] concert and [tonight’s] tree lighting, the guys have responded and resolved a lot of issues outside,” said Wilson.

The critical services provided by our Grounds employees help to maintain our community’s investment in Hockinson’s schools and the comfort and safety of the people in our schools. This could not happen without the support of the Hockinson community; levy dollars fill the gaps in school resources, programs, and services - such as Grounds - nds employees that aren't funded by the state.
