Man applies window tinting to HSD building.

As is often re-stated in our Facility Friday posts: The HSD is committed to maintaining our community’s investment in Hockinson’s schools. That is a true statement. Another true statement is: The HSD is committed to the safety of our students and staff. These two commitments are “reflected” in the recent installation of reflective window films (also known as privacy window films) on HSD campuses.

Reflective window film is a thin special plastic application that adheres to the interior of a window. It creates a “mirrored” effect on the outside of the window which, by reflecting outside light and scenery, makes it difficult - but not impossible - to see inside. It is this reflectivity that increases the security for the students and staff inside our schools.

This film has a second benefit, especially for school windows that face the south and west: They reflect solar heat, which reduces solar penetration, glare, and energy costs. All three are priorities at Hockinson Middle School, where the window film will be applied next. The school’s gym has a bank of windows and doors that face west. So afternoon sunsets can really interfere with the visibility of both players and spectators. The combination of sunshine and crowds can also make the gym uncomfortably hot. Adding reflective film will moderate glare and indoor temperatures, lessening the demand on the gym’s HVAC system.

While the film’s third benefit - blocking UV rays that can bleach hardwood floors and furnishings - is a positive, the main benefit relates to school security. The film, which has been applied to windows at Hockinson Heights Elementary School and the Hockinson Community Center, helps to create a safe and secure learning environment inside our classrooms. Safety and facility improvements like this would not be possible without the support of the Hockinson community and funds from the 2022 Educational Programs and Operations Levy. Thank you, Hockinson!
