Deputy Sheriff Kyle Souvenir stands in the middle of a group of students outdoors at a school.

Hockinson Heights Elementary School received a special visit today from the Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Department that brought excitement and inspiration to its youngest learners. Deputy Sheriff Kyle Souvenir stopped by to talk with first-grade students about the importance of community safety, the role of law enforcement, and the value of following rules.

During his visit, Deputy Souvenir offered students a glimpse into the daily life of a law enforcement officer, answering questions and demonstrating some of the tools used in the field. A highlight of the visit was when students got the chance to explore the inside of the deputy’s patrol vehicle and experience the thrill of hearing the “whoop, whoop” of the siren. The experience left a lasting impression and sparked curiosity in many young minds.

This visit is part of Hockinson School District’s broader future-readiness initiative, a multi-phase approach designed to prepare students for life after graduation, whether they choose to enroll in college, enlist in the military, or enter the workforce.

Phase 1: Career Exploration at Hockinson Heights Elementary School
At the elementary level, students are introduced to a variety of careers through guest speakers like Deputy Souvenir and local business owners. These experiences are paired with hands-on projects and a popular JA BizTown field trip, where students operate mock businesses and gain valuable financial literacy skills.

Phase 2: Career Preparation at Hockinson Middle School
Middle school students deepen their career exploration by connecting classroom learning to real-world opportunities. This includes engaging science curriculum videos, college campus visits, and ongoing exposure to career options through classroom activities.

Phase 3: Career Launch at Hockinson High School
By high school, students begin refining their career interests and making tangible postsecondary plans. Through programs such as College in the High School (CiHS), Career & Technical Education (CTE), and Advanced Placement (AP) courses, Hockinson High School equips students with the skills and experiences needed for a successful transition after graduation.
