As part of their “ABCs of College Degrees” countdown, students in Mrs. Warunek-Lane’s fifth-grade classroom are exploring different careers and college majors one letter at a time. Today’s focus was on B for Business, and students received a hands-on lesson they will not soon forget.
Local business owner Mrs. Currens visited the class to share her experiences running a business and to guide students through a fun and practical project. Using a cookie stand as their model, students practiced math by calculating costs and profit margins. They worked through advertising challenges, analyzed competition, and brainstormed their own business ideas. The lesson brought the concept of entrepreneurship to life in a creative and engaging way.
This experience is part of Hockinson School District’s future-readiness initiative, a multi-phase approach that helps students prepare for success after graduation, whether they plan to enroll in college, enlist in the military, or enter the workforce. In middle school, these students will be preparing for their futures by applying classroom learning to solve real world problems. In high school, these same students will narro their interests and begin to launch their post-high school plans.
