Representatives from Fire District 3 present at the June 3 Silver Social.

‘Tis the season…for dry summer conditions and the increased possibility of wildfires, especially for Hockinson families. “With parts of Hockinson in a wildland-urban interface, this is a particularly important topic to address at this time of year” said Chris Drone, Fire Chief, Fire District 3.

Drone and Division Chief Jason Mansfield presented on wildfire safety at the June 3 Silver Social, reminding attendees of wildfires such as Nakia Creek (2022) and Eagle Creek (2017) that recently impacted local and nearby residents. They also harkened back to the historic Yacolt Burn of 1902 that destroyed over 200,000 acres of timberland and resulted in 38 deaths in Southwest Washington.

Drone and Mansfield then turned the focus to the present, addressing risk and the importance of wildfire preparedness. “Wildfires are dynamic events that are dependent on fuel, topography, and weather - and weather is a factor we can’t control. Locally, wildfire severity largely depends on sustained east winds,” said Mansfield.

Both presenters emphasized the importance of proactive planning and taking steps now to “harden” homes to reduce vulnerability to wildfires. “One ember, landing in a dry pile of leaves or gutter debris can be enough” to trigger a destructive fire, said Drone. Homeowners are advised to clear the five feet closest to their home of any dead vegetation or combustible material, including barkdust.  The same should be done for areas up to twenty feet away from a structure such as firewood and piles of trimmings.

Drone also encouraged all Hockinson homeowners to prepare a “go bag” of emergency supplies in case emergency officials call for an evacuation. He also invited homeowners to take advantage of Fire District 3’s free fire risk assessment. To participate, residents just need to submit an online questionnaire. A representative from Fire District 3 will perform an onsite visit to assess a property’s fire risk level and offer suggestions on how to reduce risk.
