Washington’s construction and skilled trade industries are among the fastest-growing in the state with an estimated 6,200 carpenter job openings each year. At HHS, students like junior Lars Sarkinen are turning that demand into opportunity. Through the Career & Technical Education (CTE) and Running Start programs, he is already gaining skills and experiences that will grant him a competitive edge in the workforce. What CTE classes have you taken?
I’ve taken Wood Technology, Wood Craftsmanship, and Health. I am currently in Running Start, so I am looking forward to taking classes in order to pursue my mechanical engineering degree.
What are some of the most valuable skills you've learned through CTE activities?
I have learned many valuable skills in school, but the most interesting ones for me are the ones I gained in SkillsUSA. I learned much about carpentry and plumbing, and gained skills I will be able to use in my career.
Which projects or hands-on experiences are you most proud of?
I am most proud of winning the state SkillsUSA plumbing competition and getting to go to Atlanta, Georgia, for the national competition.
How are your high school classes preparing you for the future?
My learning will help me get my mechanical engineering degree and get a job as soon as possible.
