Group of students pose outdoors at medical center

On February 27, fifteen Hockinson High School juniors and seniors who have expressed interest in medical careers had the opportunity to observe a heart valve replacement surgery performed by Dr. Gary Ott at Providence Portland Medical Center.

Students watched the procedure from an auditorium overlooking the operating room, providing a close view of the surgery. During the operation, a physician assistant narrated the procedure, explaining explaining each step of the procedure and why it was necessary. Students asked questions throughout the experience, ranging from the medical tools being used to lighter topics such as what music is played in the operating room and which television show portrays hospital life most accurately. (The answer: Scrubs, with The Pitt as a close second.)

After the procedure, Dr. Ott spoke with students about the patient’s condition and the surgical techniques used during the operation. Members of the surgical team also shared their roles within the hospital and described the education and career paths that led them to work in the operating room.

Dr. Ott encouraged students interested in healthcare careers to stay focused and open to opportunities.

“If you work hard and have a good attitude, opportunities will come to you,” said Dr. Ott.
