The HSD is excited to host Student Learning Partners through the AmeriCorps’ Washington Reading Corps (WRC) program in all three of our schools for the 2026-27 school year. This marks the third full school year that the HSD has partnered with the WRC.
Student Learning Partners provide a wide array of services to Hockinson’s students and schools. Beyond assisting students with developing literacy and academic skills, these partners plan and oversee a range of interest-based clubs and activities across grade levels. They also organize events for students and families to foster community engagement and positive learning environments.
HSD sought our Student Learning Partners to meet district and student needs in a financially responsible manner. Service members receive training, education, medical benefits, and a small stipend. The HSD gains staff members devoted to providing additional individualized academic support for students. “It’s a win-win,” said Jennifer Sawyer, HSD Teaching and Learning Coordinator.
WRC volunteers’ service contributes to the mission of Hockinson Schools to prepare all students for lifelong success. “The AmeriCorps members' dedication to strengthening our communities will have a positive, lasting impact on our schools as they are also an important piece of the puzzle in helping all Hockinson learners thrive this year,” Sawyer said.
Meet our three 2026-27 Student Learning Partners:

Kyle Peterson (HHES)
Kyle is a Hockinson High School alumnus (‘17) who left home to study wildlife biology at the University of Montana. After graduating five years ago, Kyle returned to Hockinson to work in habitat restoration and coach cross country and track at HHS.
Serving as a Student Learning Partner felt like a natural extension of his deep involvement within the community and our schools. Having left and returned to Hockinson, Kyle has a particular appreciation for the strong family support here.
Kyle primarily works with kindergarteners and second graders at Hockinson Heights Elementary School and runs the after-school Sports Club. He works with small groups of students to enhance their literacy skills and help them learn the rhythms and expectations of school life. He is focused on building connections with students along the way and fondly remembers receiving his first piece of artwork from a student.
When not working with students, Kyle is running trails and ultra-marathons. On the rare occasions he is indoors, you will likely find him unwinding with video games.
Troy Dowling (HMS)
Troy graduated from Washington State University in 2024 with a degree in elementary education and a middle-level math endorsement. A certified teacher, he spent the last two years as a substitute teacher in the Battle Ground School District and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in health and physical education. Serving as a Student Learning Partner gives Troy the opportunity to grow as an educator while building meaningful relationships with students.
Troy dedicates his days at Hockinson Middle School to supporting student learning wherever he is needed. He is committed to creating a welcoming environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, and he strives to be a positive, reliable presence they can count on for help.
For Troy, the best part of the role is getting to know students and staff and becoming part of the HMS school community.

Onika Estrada (HHS)
Onika is a Vancouver native and Hudson’s Bay High School alumna. She went on to study ethnic studies and communications at Western Washington University. While at WWU, Onika worked as a resident advisor and supported groups of freshmen students as they adjusted to college life.
Onika developed a deep respect for teachers and the impact they have on students through her own experience in public schools. Serving as a Student Learning Partner allows Onika the chance to return to K-12 schools and experience public education from a staff perspective. She values the opportunity to work with students as she considers pursuing a career in social work.
Onika supports students at Hockinson High School by circulating around classrooms to assist with assignments and answer homework questions. Onika also provides academic tutoring services before and after school. Above all, she aims to be an extra resource where students can find connection, academic support, and general advocacy.
Onika’s favorite part of the position is developing relationships with students and staff.
