Career & Technical Education (CTE) courses bring hands-on job readiness experiences to the classroom at Hockinson High School and Hockinson Middle School. Students can discover their interests while developing technical skills and practicing professional communication, problem-solving, teamwork, and dependability.
The Hockinson School District CTE program has grown significantly in the last five years. Opportunities include expanded course offerings, off-campus field trips, on-campus college fairs, career-focused student organizations, and the annual Spring Launch Career Fair. Middle school students can take classes in woodshop, construction, video production and robotics courses. At the high school, many CTE classes offer dual credit, allowing students to earn college credit through Clark College while completing high school coursework.
"These experiences give students a tangible head start, whether they are heading straight into the workforce, an apprenticeship, or post-secondary education," said Hockinson High School College & Career Resource Specialist Angelina Sarkinen.
The program is supported by a rapidly growing network of industry and higher education representatives. The Hockinson School District CTE Advisory Committee brings together trade industry professionals, middle and high school CTE educators, school board members, Hockinson parents and community members. The committee meets three times each year to help align curriculum, equipment, and learning spaces with current industry standards and plan future opportunities for students.
SkillsUSA and Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) in Hockinson School District produce award-winning results. SkillsUSA and FBLA students have qualified for national competitions over the last two years.
“The most rewarding part of my work is watching students discover their passions and gain the confidence to pursue them,” said Sarkinen. “As a staff member, parent, and community member, it is fulfilling to see a student take advantage of the opportunity to earn college credit in high school, step out of their comfort zone and network at the Spring Launch Career Fair, or qualify for a National competition through FBLA or SkillsUSA.”
Looking to the future
A new, 100% donation-funded Skilled Trades building for CTE classes is in the process of being constructed at Hockinson High School. Permits are in process, and construction supplies have been delivered. This investment will support the growing skilled trades pathway as Hockinson continues helping students develop practical skills, leadership experience, and clear plans for their futures.
