After more than 8 years of dedicated service to the Hockinson School District (HSD) School Board, Gordon Smith stepped down from his position as District 5 Director at the Board’s July 25 Work Session. As Smith closes this chapter of public service, he leaves behind a legacy of thoughtful leadership, integrity, and an enduring commitment to Hockinson's students and community.
Public service comes naturally to Smith. A former Marine, Smith previously served on the School Board of the Cape Flattery School District, and is a longtime employee of the U.S. Department of the Interior. Family, community, and heritage also prominently define Smith’s personal and professional identity. He and his wife, Anna, put down roots in Hockinson in 2009. In the 17 years since, they have raised three children - all Hockinson High School graduates: Maggie (2012), Jesse (2017), and Jack (2025). Smith and his family are members of the Makah Indian Tribe, and he brought those experiences with him to the School Board. He and Anna have also shared Makah traditions with HSD students, enriching Native American curriculum at all three HSD schools.
Smith was first elected to the HSD Board as its District 5 Director in December 2017. Over the years, Hockinson voters elected Smith to the Board three times, reflecting the community’s confidence in his steady leadership and commitment to public education. “Gordon approaches every issue with the best interests of students at heart. His commitment to make Hockinson a better place for every student and family is genuine and has guided his decisions on all issues, big and small. I think the world of Gordon and the Board and I will greatly miss his presence around the board table," said Superintendent Steve Marshall.
During his tenure, Smith helped the HSD School Board navigate significant financial pressures, changing educational expectations, and major community decisions with a collaborative approach to problem-solving. He emphasized responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars while advocating for the academic and extracurricular programs and services that support Hockinson students.
"It has been a true privilege to serve the Hockinson community. I have loved being a member of this Board and working to support our students, staff, and families. While my current work commitments no longer allow me to dedicate the time this position requires, I step away with tremendous confidence in the Board and district leadership. Without exception, every director I served with cared deeply about our students and approached every decision with integrity and compassion,” said Smith. “I will always be proud to have been part of this team."

His commitment to serving students and strengthening the Hockinson community will continue to be felt long after his final board meeting.
Thank you, Mr. Smith!
